KAB Week 2011 report

Keep Australia Beautiful Week ran from Monday 22 – Sunday 28 August in 2011 and focused on the effects litter has on our oceans and waterways, and the direct impact it has on the health and safety of marine wildlife. The launch, featuring marine litter in the Pacific Ocean and at Lord Howe Island, was held at Taronga Zoo, Sydney with Government and Industry representatives and a presentation by our celebrity ambassador Lyndsey Rodrigues. Click to see her presentation.

The results of the annual Keep Australia Beautiful National Litter Index were also launched as part of KAB Week.

Hungry Jack’s is the Principal Sponsor of KAB Week.  As part of their activities in 2011, marine themed tray liners were featured in restaurants nationally throughout August, whilst poster artwork and a template media release to generate some local media coverage, were also provided as part of the local restaurant information kits.

Clemenger BBDO in Sydney provided probono creative support to the KAB Week campaign, developing an ambient PR stunt opportunity to highlight how litter ends up in waterways, and posters with the taglines “Dropped on Land, Kills at Sea’ and ‘Where does your rubbish go?’

The total audience reach/opportunity to view through media editorial coverage was approximately 16 million, compared to 8.04 million in 2010 and 6.68 million in 2009.

A PR stunt held in both the Sydney and Brisbane CBDs featured ocean and marine animal noises being emitted from selected stormwater drains to highlight how litter on our streets can end up in local waterways.

Volunteer Staff Day with The Wrigley Company

On 12th October, KAB organised a Volunteer Staff Day with associates of The Wrigley Company in conjunction with the Mars Volunteer Program 2011. The staff spent a full monitoring the Hawkesbury foreshore in Mooney Mooney and removing unwanted litter with volunteers from MacMasters Beach Surf Lifesaving Club and assisted in clearing weed infestation with NSW National Parks and Wildlife rangers. The rangers also showed the volunteers the amount revegetation work they have been doing in the area. Amoung the rubbish collected were clothing items, a Styrofoam surfboard, tarpaulins, ropes, beverage containers and even a bed and mattress!!. The staff thoroughly enjoyed the day and felt great knowing they were making a positive difference.

If you would like your company to participate in a Volunteer Staff Day, please contact us and check out our Volunteer Staff Days webpage.
